Most interesting photographer you came across for the first time:
Jo Ann Callis' early colour work. Amazingly haptic, smart and psychologically erotic.
Domingo Millela's work at Brancolini Grimaldi, in the show 'what is contemporary?'. Opened up some ideas I'm working with at the moment in relation to photographs and objects working together.
Most interesting video artist you came across for the first time: 18+ http://www.eighteenpl.us/
Most interesting artist you came across for the first time: Ana Rajcevic, she makes wearable sculpture pieces crossing fashion and art. Her work processes are amazing and she's so driven and focused. Really inspiring and amazing lady.
The alternative guide to the universe at the Hayward Gallery in London. Outsider artists who created their own universe through the work (view selection of works HERE). My favorite was Lee Godie who was a homeless artist making self portraits using photo booths in bus stations. She'd spend hours dressing up and changing her look, kinda like a homeless Cindy Sherman. Such beautiful uncontrived work.
Bowie Is at the V&A. Such a well put together exhibition of influences, working methods and ideas spanning his entire career, not just music but performance, theatre, and visual arts.
Best photo book: Robert Mapplethorpe, Object by Dashwood. It's a collection of early unpublished collages and Polaroid works with an intro by Patti Smith.
Best movie: an 80’s film called MOMO. It's written by the guy who wrote The Neverending Story. It's pretty philosophical for a children's film, about the concept of time and how it's used in modern society.
Best youtube video: Big Bad Momma -an Angie Dickinson film. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvpwvMm9cRk
Best music video: A fan made video for Tricky's 'Bonnie & Clyde' using footage from the 1967 film 'Bonnie & Clyde'. There's something really sexy and great about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo8xVNexMIE
Best publication: Aperture magazine has kept me pretty engaged this year.
Best thing: Sleeping in an art shipping crate kitted with a light bulb and a shelf.
Best completely miscellaneous thing: finding Zoltar.
Best flashback: Hiding mattresses under a skate bowl.
Sad goodbyes: Dear Friends, Silwex x
Exciting hellos: Surprising my closest friend for her birthday in London.
Best triumphs: hand binding my first photo book 'fugue' The final one of the edition of 11 was the sweetest.
Happiest moments: too many! Opening the show I was in 'the gravity of form' at Beers contemporary, London, with Andrew and Jack. Watching one of my favorite music artists listening to music. Spending my 35 birthday with my London family. Seeing a Gonzales-Torres work for the first time in situ. Realising how much work I made in six months at Silwex. Running around in East London with Ana, Caspar and Kristoffer looking for a decent bar. Sneaking into London for Jane's birthday. Days wandering the V&A. Finding Rid of Me on vinyl at a random record store in an alley way. Eating pizza in Echo Park with Sasha. Sunday dinners at Silwex. Discussions with Octave and Hansun. Bjarni's stories. Working with Aoi and Esteban. Watching Adrienne's work 'the intention'. Ash and Lins' welcome home post it's. Meeting new friends. Making work in a corner by a window and a railway line.
Greatest loss for everyone/Greatest win for everyone: Dare I say Abbott? I think he's making everyone angry enough to instigate a change for the better. It's hard to be complacent with that moron in parliament. Bit of a double edged sword...
