Whenever, wherever
We're meant to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear

- Shakira, Whenever, Wherever

The lyrics to Shakira's mainstream hit are fairly nonsensical, she talks about breasts being small and humble, kisses like fountains and loving ten million ways.  It is this hit from the Latin pop star that is the inspiration for Auckland based photographer Leilani Heather's project and self-published publication.

With tongue firmly in cheek, Heather takes the viewer on a journey to areas of nothingness, as she comments herself 'locations are always about travel and journey and destiny... this book takes you to destinations and then leaves you there with no cellphone or food'. Flicking through the publication the viewer is forced to notice these spaces, forced to take in every mundane and every small detail and make sense of it.

There is definitely something humourous about the project, from the title to the images of areas that are in a quiet limbo, neither here nor there. But there is also more, each image is crafted elegantly and with purpose. There is beauty in the rock piles and overgrown grasses that litter each image, there is life, there is honesty; these are spaces we encounter on a daily basis.

Heather sees the small spaces and moments in between the larger, louder moments of life. The quirky and the amusing, the quiet and the subtle. As the viewer of her work you can't help but want to go on a journey with Heather, so you too can sing along to pop songs and notice the world and all of its intricacies.
