Harry Culy - The weather was ideal

'Where is gothic? It’s in your neighborhood, just around the corner.'
- Martin Edmond

By the Wayside attempts to construct a dark visual narrative, drawing on elements of the Aotearoa gothic tradition in both film and literature. It is a perspective of an isolated country and its people, but also a personal interpretation of sense of place. This work aims to present an alternative to the brightly coloured picture postcards New Zealand is usually associated with.

Ultimately, this project presents an uneasy vision of New Zealand as a strange land filled with both the familiar and the unfamiliar, the ugly and the beautiful, and the past wrapped up in the present.
