As we venture out past the void of known rhetoric, face new adventures, become more than we know, we still hold on to a small talisman of the life now gone - like holding onto a thread passing through a wormhole. Remember this thought! Remember this feeling you had the first time you felt it. This will remind you, we will remind you.
We churn out relics and sift for wonder. Constructing forms against a backdrop of shapeless deaths and wishes. Vignettes of anointed objects take over places with their symmetrically balanced seriousness. You situate everything with care. I look at it all and feel raw yet timeless. Occasional ad-hoc muddles disrupt the precision yet add to the sense that we care more than ever. We swim through our own embalming fluid. Shrines are prepared for the times when petrifying clarity jars up against the unknown, for this is when we need symbols more than we need objects.
I was already gone to the elements, my core had rusted, my skin was so brittle it flaked. I was a dead relic waiting for the worms to reclaim me, for gravity to pull me back into the earth. Yet here you are, the restorer, raising me from the edge of death, renewed. But you do not work with me, instead you rob me and pull my teeth out, leaving me safe and dumb and shackled. I lie waiting to die again, watching you pass by everyday, useful again as the ornament of your grief to the unknown.
As I fade away, you will hold onto a single image of me, an act, a principle, a value. You will knowingly or unknowingly hold onto and build from it, lovingly distorting what I once was, smashing any truth about memory into pliable, workable forms. As I fade away you desperately enshrine me.
